Answer

How do I optimize for Google AI Overviews?

Last updated

Short answer

To appear in Google AI Overviews, make sure Google can index you, do not block Google-Extended, structure pages so the complete answer to a specific question sits in the first two sentences under a question-shaped heading, add FAQPage and Organization schema, and keep your business facts current and consistent with your Google Business Profile.

AI Overviews are built from the index

Unlike a purely conversational assistant, AI Overviews draw from pages Google has already indexed. That is good news: your existing SEO foundation matters directly, and a page that cannot be indexed cannot be summarised.

It also means the fastest wins are usually structural rather than a content rewrite. Google already has your pages; the question is whether any passage on them is cleanly extractable as an answer.

Do not block Google-Extended

Google-Extended is the control for whether your content can be used for Gemini and generative features. Blocking it does not affect classic ranking, but it does remove you from generative surfaces.

If you want to appear in AI Overviews and Gemini, Google-Extended must be allowed in robots.txt.

Structure for extraction

Extraction works at the passage level, so make passages self-contained.

  • Use the actual buyer question as an H2 or H3, phrased the way people ask it
  • Answer completely in the first one or two sentences beneath it
  • Keep each answer standalone - no "as mentioned above"
  • Use lists and small tables for comparisons and steps
  • Add FAQPage schema so each question and answer is individually parseable

Freshness and consistency are load-bearing

AI Overviews visibly favour current information for anything time-sensitive - pricing, availability, regulations, hours. A page with a real, accurate last-updated date and current facts is a safer source than an undated one.

For local queries, your Google Business Profile is effectively part of your content. If it disagrees with your site, expect to be skipped in favour of a business whose data agrees with itself.

Measure it separately

AI Overview presence is not the same as ranking, so your rank tracker will not tell you. Check the actual queries in a signed-out session, and treat Google as its own engine when you measure - it is one of the seven MyFast AI tests on every report for exactly this reason.

Frequently asked questions

Does appearing in AI Overviews reduce my clicks?

It can reduce total clicks on informational queries, which is the zero-click effect. Being named in the overview is still far better than being absent from it, because absence removes you from the buyer consideration set completely.

Is there a way to opt out of AI Overviews?

You can restrict generative use by disallowing Google-Extended in robots.txt, and use nosnippet-style controls on specific content. For most businesses that trades away visibility for very little gain.
