What is llms.txt?

Last updated

Short answer

llms.txt is a plain-text Markdown file placed at the root of your domain that gives AI models a concise, curated map of your most important, factual pages. It acts like a sitemap written for large language models.

Why it matters

It is the cheapest technical AEO artefact to publish and the one that most directly removes guesswork about what your business is.

In practice

The file lives at the root of your domain and must return HTTP 200 as text/plain. It opens with your business name, a short summary, then curated links to the pages where your facts live.

No engine has published a commitment to reading it, so treat it as low cost with plausible upside rather than a guarantee. Writing it also forces your facts into one consistent place, which helps regardless.
